6 Questions to Ask Your Vet Before a Daily Joint Chew

Six questions to bring to your next vet visit before adding a daily joint chew.

Why ask the vet first

You don't have to. Joint chews are sold over-the-counter. But owners who do ask report two things:

  1. The vet has context (current meds, surgery history, breed risk) you don't
  2. Showing the label opens a real conversation about what to watch for

Question 1: Is the dose right for my dog's weight?

TROT uses 500mg glucosamine, 300mg chondroitin, 200mg MSM, 100mg hemp seed oil, 40mg vitamin C, 20mg green lipped mussel, 8mg HA per 2 chews. Standard daily-routine doses for a medium dog. Vets often suggest size-based scaling: small dogs 1 chew, medium 2, large 4.

Question 2: Does this interact with my dog's current medications?

The most common ones to ask about:

  • Anticoagulants (some dogs on heart meds)
  • NSAIDs (Carprofen, Rimadyl, Meloxicam) — show the label to your vet, the actives in TROT are nutritional but stacking with prescription anti-inflammatories is a vet conversation
  • Gabapentin / Trazodone — TROT does not include calming herbs, but show the label to your vet anyway if your dog is on these

Question 3: Is there a reason to wait based on my dog's history?

Especially for:

  • Recent surgery (post-op timeline matters)
  • Pregnancy or nursing
  • Liver or kidney conditions
  • Active flare of an underlying condition

Question 4: What should I watch for in the first 4-6 weeks?

Most owners notice changes between weeks 4 and 6. The vet can tell you which signals matter for your specific dog: gait, willingness to jump, willingness to use stairs, bed-rise time, appetite, energy.

Question 5: When should I stop or swap?

Reasons to stop or swap:

  • Any digestive change that lasts more than 5 days
  • Any new lethargy or appetite change
  • If the daily routine becomes a fight (most dogs love TROT, but if yours doesn't, the 60-day guarantee is real)

Question 6: What's my long-game routine?

The chew is daily. The vet check-up is annual. Some owners add an underwater treadmill or rehab session quarterly for tripawd or post-TPLO dogs. Build the routine with your vet, not in isolation.
