Glucosamine, Chondroitin, MSM for Dogs: Honestly
Share
Plain-English breakdown of the three ingredients that show up on every joint supplement label.
Glucosamine, in 90 seconds
Glucosamine is a sugar molecule the body uses to build cartilage and joint fluid. As a dog ages, the body's own glucosamine production slows. The supplement gives the body the raw material to keep doing its own joint maintenance.
Two forms exist:
- Glucosamine HCl — slightly higher concentration of pure glucosamine per gram. The form most studies use.
- Glucosamine sulfate — bonded with sulfur. Some research suggests slightly better absorption, but the head-to-head data is thin.
TROT uses Glucosamine at 500mg per 2 chews — a meaningful daily dose for a medium dog.
Chondroitin, in 90 seconds
Chondroitin sits in the joint cartilage matrix and helps it hold water. Hydrated cartilage absorbs shock. Dehydrated cartilage cracks and grinds.
Chondroitin is almost always paired with glucosamine because the two work on different parts of the same problem — glucosamine builds the material, chondroitin keeps it hydrated.
TROT uses Chondroitin at 300mg per 2 chews.
MSM, in 90 seconds
MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) is a sulfur-bearing molecule. Sulfur is the building block of connective tissue, including the proteins that make up cartilage and tendons.
The role: support the body's daily comfort routine. Owners report MSM in the supplement stack as the "background ingredient" they don't notice individually but miss when they leave it out.
TROT uses MSM at 200mg per 2 chews.
Why these three almost always travel together
The supplement industry locked in on this trio in the 1990s. Glucosamine builds the cartilage matrix. Chondroitin keeps it hydrated. MSM brings sulfur for connective tissue. Three different jobs, one cartilage system.
Most dog joint supplements do these three. The differentiator on labels is usually what else sits alongside.
What TROT adds beyond the trio
- Hyaluronic Acid (8mg) — the molecule joint fluid is mostly made of
- Green Lipped Mussel (20mg) — the most studied joint nutrient in dogs
- Hemp Seed Oil (100mg) — omega-rich daily fat for connective tissue
